As an extension of our ministry, Shepherd of the Hills offers a unique worship service called Song of the Earth, held outdoors on the church campus. One of our ministers, Rev. Adelia Sandoval created this service to provide the community with a sacred space to reconnect to our Mother Earth.

Song of the Earth is a Native American themed healing service. The Call to Prayer is done by the peaceful sound of the Native American flute. A small fire burns in the center of the circle. As the wind blows, Rev. Sandoval acknowledges each direction. Gratitude prayers are read, and personal prayers are done using corn meal and tobacco. During the healing time of the service, white sage is used. The smoke from the sage is an important Native American healing element and is considered sacred.

A large stone is buried on the lawn where the congregation gathers. Rev. Sandoval saw the stone, which was to be discarded and abandoned from a redevelopment project in San Juan Capistrano. What caught her eye was the outline in darker stone of a bear. With the help of friends and some generous men with a big crane, the stone was moved to the church. It is considered a healing stone and plays an important role during the healing service. "Creator uses creation to reach out to us. This stone is a wonderful tool we have been given.”

Rev. Sandoval has been a member of Shepherd of the Hills for over six years. "I came to SOTH because it is an open, loving, and affirming church that is progressive. Here, a dream such as Song of the Earth could be realized." Being a member of the local Tribe here in Orange County, the Acjachemen Nation, Rev. Sandoval feels close to the land and has been taught by her Tribal teacher that many people have ignored or forgotten the vital connection we have with the Earth.

Song of the Earth provides this vital connection. “I share my stories and Native American teachings regarding the earth and the life that comes forth from her. I use teachings from the bible and other faith traditions relating to creation and how to walk the sacred road.”

Rev. Sandoval was ordained by Life’s Blessings Ministries in and is currently working toward licensure by the United Church of Christ.
